University of Portland
Formula SAE 2005
Dedicated members of the University of Portland's student section of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
designed and built the University's first Formula SAE car. It was taken to the 2005 Formula SAE
collegiate design competition in Pontiac, Michigan on May 18th through the 22nd. The rookie team placed a relatively
impressive 82nd place overall in a field of about 120 cars.
Formula SAE cars are one person, open-wheeled style racecars. Four-stroke engines, with displacements limited
to 610cc, must be used to power the vehicles through several dynamic testing events. The dynamic events include
acceleration, skid-pad, autocross, and endurance tests.
Please contact the Formula SAE team captain, Sean Edwards, if you would like further
information.

- After fixing the racecar, we drove to Seattle on June 25th and 26th,
2005 and participated in the first
NW Formula SAE Shootout, organized by UW and OSU and hosted at Boeing of Everett. Four
colleges attended and five cars participated. Though the idea was to have a friendly competition,
we really just ended up driving the cars a bunch. OSU had a scary moment when their throttle
stuck and the car left the course, drove entirely over a curb, and into some bushes. The car
suffered substantial damages but luckily no one was hurt. The UP racer performed very well and
it's on track testing time preceding the weekend was at least doubled by the end of the weekend.
We have finally had a chance to evaluate overall vehicle design and look forward to ironing out
several weak points over the summer.
